Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Major Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
